Magic
Wanderlust & Existentialism
Katy Kidd Art • Artist Katy Kidd
As Seen by Jennifer Esperanza
My partner Richard Kurtz & I had such a beautiful studio visit with artist Katy Kidd a few weeks ago.
Here is a peek at her work just before her upcoming show at Phil Space in Santa Fe.
“I have a severe case of wanderlust. I think of traveling all the time.
I’m hungry for experiences in other countries because I’m insanely curious
about how other people live, worship, suffer and overcome outside of our bubble in America.
I’m fascinated by what connects us all on this planet.
Most people are just trying to survive. I’m a bit of an existentialist.
I wonder a lot “what’s the purpose of existence.
Why are some thriving and others barely surviving.
Where does God fit into all of this and is God real?
Most of the time I’m better off just observing and loving what I see. I archive my imagery for my art through a lot of photography.
I work mostly from photographs from my travels.
Always objects, never people I’m just not there as a painter right now.
I have to think of what I possible want out of a shot in the studio.
Sometimes this doesn’t work out. Sometimes it’s magic.
Missed shots are a big regret.
But mostly I consider myself lucky that I get to do what I want, I get to live a life beyond what I could have imagined for myself as a kid.
I try not to forget that.”
